A regional affiliate of the National Black Law Students Association (“NBLSA”), a student-run, national organization formed to articulate and promote the needs and goals of Black law students.

National BLSA Mission: To increase the number of culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.

National BLSA Purpose: In establishing the organization, Founder Cooper and the original incorporators provided a clear vision and purpose for NBLSA in the Articles of Incorporation:

  • Articulate and promote the educational, professional, political, and social needs and goals of Black law students;
  • Foster and encourage professional competence;
  • Improve the relationship between Black law students, Black attorneys, and the American legal structure;
  • Instill in the Black attorney and law student a greater awareness and commitment to the needs of the Black community;
  • Influence the legal community by bringing about meaningful legal and political change that addresses the needs and concerns of the Black community;
  • Adopt and implement policies of economic independence;
  • Encourage Black law students to pursue careers in the judiciary; and,
  • Do all things necessary and appropriate to accomplish these purposes.

AMSL Mission Statement: Recognizing that being African-American has specific challenges, as an organization, our mission centers on Challenging, Encouraging, and Empowering African-Americans at AMSL to attain the highest standards of excellence in the areas of academics, career progression, spirituality, and personal development.  By implementing a diverse array of educational, professional, spiritual, and personal programs, we intend to foster the type of cultural and professional environment necessary to achieve successfully these goals.  At all times, we choose to exemplify genuine character, integrity, and leadership qualities that will transform the internal and external communities that we diligently seek to serve.  The objective is to sponsor activities to create, increase, and stabilize relationships among African-American legal professionals.  To wit:

  • Promote the harmony of faith and reason among African-Americans;
  • Advance academic and professional achievement of and among African-Americans;
  • Hearten the successful integration of African-Americans into the Community;
  • Assist the recruitment, admission, and success of African-American students, faculty, and staff;
  • Membership shall be open to all AMSL currently enrolled students, alumni, and current faculty/staff.
